In Old Testament times, God's people the Israelites abandoned the Covenant and Temple worship. They disobeyed the Ten Commandments and instead followed the false gods of the nations around them, even to sacrificing their own children to the Baals
cf Judges 2:11-19
God used the preaching of the Prophets and various calamities to call them back to Him. When He mercifully heard their cries and saved them from the power of their enemies they would repent for a time but then soon relapse into disobedience and their evil practices
This back and forth pattern continued for several hundred years until finally their prolonged infidelities led to their capture by the Babylonian empire, the destruction of the Temple and captivity in Babylon
They served their idols (in Canaan)
